Today my obsession with Play School continued when we packed up the kids for the long 8 minute drive to the Eltham Community Centre to see the new Play School concert.

After we parked and played a scary version of Frogger to get across one of the busiest roads in Eltham, we realised we were one of the last to arrive. Funny how kids can do that to you. The general rule is the closer the event to your house the harder it is to be early.

I used my eagle eye and spotted a 1 x 1m piece of floor space and quickly parked there only to be squawked at by an angry “Elthamite” who claimed I almost sat on her picnic hamper. Yes Picnic Hamper at an indoor concert. I ignored the anger and settled in.

It was stinking hot and you would have thought a couple of things:

  • they would have used the air-conditioner (obviously they had not seen the advice issued by the Bundoora doctors that you should use your air conditioner to keep cool)
  • they would have started on time. Not 20 minutes after the start time. If there is one thing that really gets toddlers stirred up it’s making them wait. I am no parenting expert but I reckon this is a bit of a no brainer here.

The show eventually started and out popped the two play school hosts, Abi and my personal favourite Alex Papps. That’s right Alex Papps and I reckon he looked like he had come straight from the Eltham Gateway hotel. A shave would have been nice mate you are not in the Henderson Kids now. Unless of course you have scored some acting work as an extra in the new underbelly TV series then you are excused.

You are all there probably scratching your head wondering who is Abi? Well Abi is Abi Tucker the aussie actress and after googling her (It’s true I google Playschool hosts) and checking out some of the profile shots I like even more now. If think she has won a bronze Logie for most forgettable actress in a TV series or drama.

Anyway, I thought she was great on stage, Wife A was not a fan, apparently she didn’t look interested at all, I thought she did- go figure. On the contrary I thought Alex didn’t really get into it til about half way when the acting part came on, go figure again.

The stars of the show were of course all there, Humpty, Little Ted, Grover, Jemima and Fergus the frog. Each of these characters was met with rock star welcomes and so they should be- they are legends.

Overall it had all the singing, dancing and squealing you would expect from the Play School Empire. I thought it was good but not great. It felt the same way I used to when I wanted it to be the round window but it turned out to be the arched window, a little disappointed. However, I will leave the final word to Ernie, who had an awesome time until Alex started acting and he peacefully drifted off to sleep in my arms.

I love Playschool! Actually I think I'm a Playschool groupie! Why was Grover there? Was he making a guest appearance?

I hear ya. My last experience in the Eltham Community Hall was a shocker. No seats. Hang on, didn't I pay for this ticket?!
