Unfortunately Kid X has little, in fact no choice in the team that she follows. It’s a family tradition of suffering, if you’re born into my family you barrack for a struggling club and for logistical ease you follow the same team as your dad and mum. It’s a non-negotiable, I have heard all of the debates, something about letting your kid have choices. I am all for this, you either choose the dees or you leave the house, that’s a decent choice.
There is actually a good reason to follow the dees, it’s character building, you learn about disappointment, more disappointment and when you think you can’t take any more, yet more disappointment. It’s giving Kid X a life lesson, you can’t always win, it teaches her that life is about having a go (most of the time).
Then there is the development of the skill of a quick quip. You need it to reply to the 20th person to laugh when you tell them you barrack for Melbourne. I hope she watches closely and learns.
There are some good things about following the dees….
Ummm you get to leave the games early, very handy with a 2 year old at the footy.
Seriously the players at Melbourne are only a little bit older than Kid X and this means she can see these guys play for a number of years to come.
Season 2012 is going to be an interesting season for Kid X and I. How will she go at the footy this year, will she start to understand the game, will she last out the game, will she want to switch teams to team Buddy? Too many questions. I’ll keep you all posted.
Anyone want to have a guess who Kid Y is going to barrack for?
